Just Cars Finance Managing Director Kerry Hudson, who bought her first car in 1977 at the age of 17, says “Nothing has changed in 38 years for women buying cars”.
Women Buying Cars …………. Is it the Last Frontier ??
In fact, the treatment of women by the motor vehicle industry has been the focus of a number of studies. The fact that women, have to be the subject of a “study” on buying new or used cars is a sad reflection of the motor vehicle industry as a whole, when women buy nearly 50% of all new cars sold in the marketplace. Despite the fact that the earning potential of women and the decision making power women have both independently and inside the family, women are still not receiving the same standard as men.
Do Women Pay More To Buy A Car ?
If you ask a random sampling of women how they feel about car shopping, most would rank it right up there with root canal. Many women say that the dealers “take advantage” of them or do not treat them with respect. Others are uncomfortable with the high-pressure negotiating process.
Research shows that women pay $500 – $1,000 more for cars than men. In fact, women pay 46% more for goods and services in general than men. Think about it. We pay more for hair cuts. We pay more for clothes. We pay more for dry cleaning and we pay more for CARS !! Why ?? Because we allow it. We DON’T ASK for a better deal.
And yet, “Male or Female, if you walk into a dealership without knowing what you want, or what it costs, you will end up paying for a deal and a car that suits the dealer rather than YOU. You will be relegated to ‘wood-duck’ status – a term used to describe car buyers who basically are walked down the garden path due to their own ignorance.
Reality is that, just as there are many men who know very little about cars, so to are there women who know considerably more. Cars like football, power tools and barbecuing are regarded as secret men’s business, but most men are in reality as uniformed about cars and how to buy them , as women. They just won’t admit it.
